The drop by Dennis Lehane

Such a fun quick read. Dennis Lehane always seem so good at building a world, or in most cases a neighborhood. You get a real feel for the place and feel like you would recognize the streets if you walked them and people you would see. The plot is very tight, because of the short page count, there is still a lot of development within the plot but the story doesn't veer off into side stories and extra interactions, There is a small cast of characters and they almost all exclusively deal with each other and each character is developed through those interactions. The only complaint I can think of here is that I wish there was more of this book.

challenging dark reflective tense fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated

really a short story. using his fame to put a hard backed cover and sell as a "book". it is interesting to me how Lehane and make bad guys from Boston so likeable.

Direct, gimey, crisp and near perfect, this book is. It was a great read, that probably takes as long to get through as the movie does to watch. Lehane writes such interesting characters with minimal language and a tone that makes you feel at home in a world you are not used to. It is a fun book with a powerful catch that you should have seen coming. Bravo.
