Three women, an art gallery worker, a housewife, and a receptionist, all receive a letter that their husbands created a terrible act years earlier. These women don't know each other, but one of the wives reaches out to each of them to determine if the author of the letter is telling the truth, which will upset their lives and everything they thought they knew. As they investigate, they find that the writer was an artist, and both she and her mother are dead.
The women bond together trying to learn the truth. There is a tragedy and also a surprise at the end.
This was an interesting book, and I can see how learning about this act would destroy your life. But what was more surprising was the real plot revealed at the end.

Three women get notes telling them their husbands raped a woman. So begins this new psychological thriller from Cate Ray where the wives of seemingly good men investigate what happened in the past and determine whether their husbands need to be held accountable. Twisty and full of thought-provoking moral questions/dilemmas, this was an enjoyable read that tackles tough topics about consent and justice. Great on audio with a full cast of narrators and recommended for fans of books like An ambush of widows.

TW ⚠️: Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence

Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for providing a digital copy of the book for me to read in exchange for my honest opinion.

Synopsis: Jessica, Stephanie and Priyanka are complete strangers, they’ve each received a letter accusing their husbands of committing a sexual assault more than two decades prior. Is the accusation true or is there more to the story? It was a secret that remained buried for years. The three women come together to embark on a hunt for the truth, but they are hardly prepared for what they will discover. Who is the victim, and will justice ultimately be served?

My Thoughts: This book blew my mind and is on point for today’s world, while a work of fiction, a powerful and important message. The biggest power point that I took from the reading is the characters. The characters are empowering, strong, resilient, courageous, they are layered with depth, and give a fair representation of the stages of grief. The story was narrated through the 3 women with the diary entries of the victim interlaced into it. The author’s plot was engaging and tackled an important issue in our culture today, sexual assault on women, how our culture views it, and the victim receives it. The writing is complex, detailed, and intriguing. I personally went through a variety of emotions, sadness, anger, sense of empowerment through the victim, and could feel the devastation that this act can cause. The end was just WOW. I highly recommend this book but with the caveat that this is NOT a light read, it is NOT a typical thriller and you will get invested emotionally.

Good Husbands
By Cate Ray
Release date 06/07/2022

Jessica, Stephanie, and Priyanka are complete strangers, but they have one thing in common: more than two decades ago, unbeknownst to them, their husbands committed a sexual assault. Or was it something else—a night of drunken regrets, just a horrible misunderstanding? It was a secret that remained buried for years.

Some of these ladies are on board to seek the truth, and one takes a minute to come around. The undeniable bond between the three is there right away, and they’re forever bonded over the heinous acts of their husbands. These three women uncover a stockpile of lies that have been hidden for 20 years. And OMG, THE END. LAWD

Billed as a thriller, and while it wasn't really a thriller by my standards as a regular true crime junkie, it was a solid read. I read this quicker than I would normally read a nearly 400-page book (378) because it was engrossing, if not thrilling. I was actually shocked by an occurrence that I assume was intended to be shocking, which is refreshing, when most twists can be seen coming a mile away after reading enough. Down a star because it just wasn't quite what I had expected when I pre-ordered it in April.

I spent most of the time reading this one confused. Where was the story going? Why was it considered to be a thriller? The story is told from the points of view from 3 women, and it was a bit hard to follow. The stories were hard to keep separate.

The plot, characters, and book as a whole just wasn’t a winner for me. I’d skip this one personally.

The idea behind Good Husbands is great. Multiple wives finding out their husbands raped someone when they were young? Interesting! I love how this book pulls these very different people together and how they change over time due to their interactions with one another. But the ending just feels so rushed and not right for the story I wanted.
