Wish I could give 3.5 stars. This book was slooow starting off, and the gaggle of minute details sprinkled in from previous books and the alternating narrative perspective threw me off at first. Although I read (and liked) the books leading up to this one, it took a while to get to know them again because they were so buried in the minutiae. But then Gabaldon's characterization and historical research won me over and I was sad to have finished this 800+ page behemoth, leaving these people alone for another three years while she writes a new one.

Another epic adventure of Claire and Jamie Fraser as they navigate the beginning of the revolutionary war. This book is long, and therefore quite the commitment. I listened to the first half of the book a while ago, and it unfortunately got returned to the library before I could finish. This created quite the gap in my reading…which makes it tough to remember all that happened. I do remember really liking the first half, especially the parts about Bri and Roger living in the 21st century. The second part that I read more recently was really action packed and kept me on the edge of my seat! So many big things happened right at the end that I didn’t expect it to actually be the end. I’m looking forward to the next book.

This book was probably the slowest and most disappointing in the series to date. I have been reading them for nearly a decade, so I don't read them back to back. This one had a lot of boring battle/ military descriptions that I could have done without. The end was also frustrating because it felt crammed into the book, and there is no resolution or at least a good stopping place like past books so that if another book was never to surface, the reader would feel the story was somewhat complete. This one left the climax near the end for another book to finish, let's hope that happens soon! I will however miss Claire and Jaime, they are a comforting presence when I read this series.

This one was mostly boring and only got mildly interesting towards the end. I really feel like at this point the author is just grasping for bad things to happen to her characters so that the story continues. So many of the conflicts that come up seem so unnecessary. I'm kind of wondering if the author just doesn't know how to end a story/series so this will just keep going on forever. Plodding on to the next one...

excellent follow up in the Outlander Series. the only major flaw is the complete and total lack of *conclusiveness* in the "ending." she is clearly banking on everybody buying the next book, and therefore doesn't bother to even pretend to wrap up 4/5 of the plot strands, which are simply left hanging. an exercise for the reader's imagination for the next three years until another one comes out. i'm sure i'll pick up the next one then, but really, Diana, you shouldn't have. what a cheap way to end a book.
on the other hand, Ian's character development is wonderful, and many of the new characters are likewise completely awesome (Denny & Rachel, for instance). the shift in focus from Jaime & Claire to a combination of them, John & William, Ian, Brianna & Roger is probably going to allow Gabaldon to actually conclude the series at some point (they really do have to die eventually). but then, this book only got through two calendar years (in 814 pages), so you know, she could keep milking it for a while. They're slowing down convincingly, though, which helps.
overall, well worth reading, and worth the wait. but if you're not in a hurry, you might as well wait for the next one, because there's nothing about this one that says "finished" in any sense.
