“Dear Kit, went another imaginary letter to my sister. I write to you from outside a roaring train, where I am about to lose my life. All I can see is a design the color of those rain boots they used to make you wear. I send best wishes and warm personal regards.”

This book was excellent. It cemented my admiration for Snicket’s writing style. It is one of my favourites of all his work.

“I hope you’re not going to do anything foolish.”
“I hope you’re not hoping too hard.”

This series was hilarious and creepy, gothic in the best of ways. It exceeded all my expectations. In this final book, all the characters came together to defeat the notorious villain Hangfire, with a dramatic and unexpected ending.

My love for these characters…. They are all so vivid and interesting. Moxie, Ellington, Jack and Cleo, Dashiell Qwerty, Pip and Squeak. I need MORE.

Getting to meet Hangfire was also so satisfying, after Lemony has spent the whole series chasing him. I won’t say much, but he was perfectly chilling and sufficiently creepy.

The plot! AH! So many twists and turns and unexpected happenings. I couldn’t stop reading.

In true Lemony Snicket fashion, the book closed with new mysteries beginning, and some questions left unanswered. I really hope we get a new series in the future - continuing in Lemony’s journey.

4.5 stars. A great ending to a great series. However, there was a big lack of illustrations, I just love Seth's art and I was sad that we barely got to see it in this one.

We also get a mention for Hector, Josephine, Olaf and some others from the Unfortunate Events series! Loved it!
