What has stuck with me is that The Child seemingly never thought to set out on her own while the rest of the group settled down. And when left with just Laura, she stayed with no expressed complaint when asked to stay until she had gone.

The Child has much more humanity than she gives herself credit for. As bleak as this novel is at times, it offers a view of a species with intrinsic values and identities, of companionship, determination, and deep capacity of loss.

This book didn’t have chapters to break up the reading which I didn’t like but did get used to.

As someone usually reads books with many plot twists, this read was constant contemplation. I wish we had an answer in the end. Who locked them up? Why? Where did the guards go? Where are they? I need SOME closure

Just wow. This book is not being talked about enough! Short, but with so much to think about afterwards. For people that love *kinda* dystopian settings and feminine novels. It doesn’t quite conclude with any answers to the initial mystery, but you learn it’s not even about that at all. What a gorgeous book. Which I could read it all over again.

I loved the premise of this book. The fact that it was okay not to have the answer to all the questions. It really made me think about who we are as humans if we were to be stripped down of our culture (and everything that makes us who we think we are), compared to those who have an idea of what life is "supposed" to be like.

If societal expectations and the patriarchy didn't play a role, what would we do? What kind of society would we create?

The reason my rating isn't higher, is because it was a slow read without much of a plot. I understood why the scenes and situations were repeated multiple times, but it left me feeling lost and incredibly depressing. The premise makes the book such a worthwhile read, but be prepared to feel depressed yet eerily hopeful.
