Welp. I'm at a loss for words a little bit. This is a difficult book. It is bleak, it is somber, it is philosophical, it is without comfort. The narrator, a woman who was imprisoned as a child with 39 grown women for no apparent reasons, has had no normal societal experiences. She writes plainly about what her life has been in the cage and outside of it after an exceptional chance occurrence allows the women to escape. She does not for a moment coddle the reader.
There are no answers here; nothing is explained. There is no happy ending. This is 𝘯𝘰𝘵 a book that I would ever find myself recommending but it has somehow affected me profoundly.

Enigmatic, thought-provoking and utterly dark. I flew through the story, driven by the compelling narrative voice and the unanswered questions peppered throughout. The book explored human nature in a way I haven’t really seen before, where the small details of everyday life are placed under a magnifying glass, showcasing what society has conditioned us to seek persistently. Truly haunting, I expect it will stay with me for a while.
