This is my first Rachel Radner book and I was intrigued by having an empath as a main character.

You’re the healthiest broken person I’ve ever met,” I tease. “How do you figure?” He runs a hand through his hair. “Don’t most people in your situation brush off all their feelings?”

Maddie and Ashton first meet as strangers at her restaurant. His favorite restaurant was where he planned to propose to Vanessa (the self-centered bitch). Of course, as an empath, Maddie knew what he planned to do and jumped the gun on the celebration right where Vanessa broke up with him.  Awkward. The sadness and heartache that passed between Maddie and Ashton that night was unforgettable.  Jump to months later, Maddie's restaurant is in financial trouble and she needs someone to upgrade her website. Enter a very reluctant Ashton who swore to never set foot in that restaurant again. It's destiny that brings them together, but can they get past their fears to let each other in.

Maddie's empathic abilities are mind-blowing and a little creepy. It takes women's intuition to a whole other level. I was delighted that Ashton wasn't all that freaked out about it. In fact, he caught on fairly quickly. Probably because he is a sensitive guy who wears his heart on his sleeve. When his girlfriend of 6 years breaks up with him, my heart broke as he cried in the middle of a restaurant. Yes, he's not an alpha male (there is one moment though...), but a sweet computer programmer who codifies his feelings to make sense of them.  In other words, he compartmentalizes and analyzes his life the same way he codes websites.  Geeky, huh?  Endearing, actually. Maddie is a lovely person who always wants to save people from themselves, but it always backfires on her leaving her alone romantically.  It appears her abilities scare most people off and I was heartsick at her childhood memories. Thankfully, she has her wonderful best friend (well, only friend) Simon who is a bit pushy and judgy, but only because he wants to see her happy. Eventually, Ashton and Maddie have a happy ever ending after clearing up some angsty misunderstandings.

I am delighted to recommend this friends-to-lovers romantic story about taking chances and knowing, and owning, your worth.

Thank you to Ms. Radner for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

Maddie and Ashton’s story is short but sweet. They become friends and they both want much more but he’s been hurt and his ex reappears so things are complicated. I felt bad for Ashton with his horrible boss and shallow, dismissive girlfriend. Vanessa did him a favor when she broke up with him so it was frustrating that he couldn’t see their relationship for what it was and actually missed her. It took some time for him to realize what he had with Maddie, but once he did, nothing else mattered. Maddie adores him and appreciates him and they’re great together so this is a HEA that made me smile.
