I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could.

In some places the whole thing was a bit... long-winded. The background/worldbuilding came in bits and pieces, and could've made everything far more interesting had it been placed better. A lot of the twists and turns I saw coming from miles away.

Overall I liked the concept of it though, scrivings, merchant houses, a world turned upside down. The characters fell a bit flat, as only one of them really seemed to have grown, but the end of it all is promising
Spoilerin regard to future development of the main character
.

My favorite character:
SpoilerClef. And the gravity rigs tbh, they had funny dialogues.

This may just be the start of my new favorite fantasy trilogy since Mistborn. Sancia, like Vin, is a bit of badass lady that will do what she needs to do to survive and walk away with some loot. This is a heist story at its heart, but it is also so much more. I love Sancia, but I may love Clef even more. The characters in this are just the best (even the ones I absolutely hate).

The magic system is top-tier and well defined. It almost feels like there are essentially magical servers that make the magic work, which is such a cool concept. I love how the magic, called scriving, is used as a tool throughout the story and does not end up as a big save-the-world plot device type of magic. Also the very slow burn of a romance that is just beginning is done very well.

I highly recommend this story especially if you love an action-packed story set in a Venice-like world with magical steampunk vibes. The world-building is incredibly flawless and I love every minute I spent exploring this world with Sancia, Gregor, Orso, and Bernice.
