I really enjoyed this, more than I initially expected! a refreshing read

“All things have a value. Sometimes the value is paid in coin. Other times, it is paid in time and sweat. And finally, sometimes it is paid in blood.

Humanity seems most eager to use this latter currency. And we never note how much of it we’re spending, unless it happens to be our own.”

Better review to follow at some point -

But I loved this! It felt so fresh after spending a lot of time in YA fantasy. The plot was fast enough the whole way, and there was never dull moment. The idea behind the world fascinated me, and I love all the corruptness.

Quite a novel story

The book set up a fully fleshed out world. The main character, Sancia, was very interesting. The things she can do, why she can do them, and what it means to the world were great revelations throughout the book. Supporting cast was also spot on. I can't mention one, because it would be too great of a spolier, but there were late surprises about him that added more depth and explained many things about him.

Though this is a trilogy, it's a complete story. If course there are other things that were set in motion for other books but those are things that will delve even deeper in the nature of the world. Buy this book.

This book didn’t stand out to me. Like, it was good and I liked it, but I also just didn’t really feel anything about it.

4.5 stars, rounding up

I had such a good time reading this book! The magic system is interesting, the characters are likable and well developed, and the plot kept surprising me at every turn. There were times when the writing was just kind of mediocre, but overall did not detract from my enjoyment. I had hoped there would be no romance (can't we get a female-led fantasy novel where she doesn't fall in love??) , but I guess they're cute so I'll allow it. It also was by no means a focus (it could have been removed without any effect on the story, which is I guess part of my complaint: why was it included?). Anyway....most definitely going to pick up the next book.
