I'm a little mad at myself for putting this off a year! I started this book last December, and I stopped after a chapter. I wasn't in a fantasy mood and couldn't get into it.
I've made it my mission to clear up my "Currently Reading" shelf before the end of the year, so I started this one again, and I couldn't put it down.

The world was just so fascinating!
The magic system is intricate and is such a cool concept. It's a lexical magic system. Basically, magic is inscribed into objects. For example, someone could inscribe a paper to be as heavy as a rock, etc. by just convincing the objects that are light as a feather.
It was just such a creative magic system, which is why I enjoyed the book so much.

I enjoyed the internal dramas of the different warring merchant houses A LOT because I just enjoy political intrigue so much.

All the characters were so much fun to read. I enjoyed Sancia and Gregor so much.
I loved how their storylines parallel each other.
SpoilerThe twist of Gregor also being scribed was so good! I was shocked? I get why his mother did that, but she must've known it would make him easier for his enemies to use him.
I wasn't a big fan of Orso, but he grew on me by the end of the book.

The plot was fast-paced and engaging, and the twists were so unexpected. I enjoyed the threads Bennet left of the overarching plot, and I'm curious enough that I plan to read the next book in the series.

Overall, it's a great book, and I'm annoyed at myself for not reading this book earlier.

This one was a strange one for me. The positives: a neat world, an inventive and complex magic system, and a ragtag group of flawed characters. I love the heists and how cleverly the characters solved the problems presented to them, using both the limitations and the expansiveness of the magic system to their advantage.
However…this book was ploddingly slow. Emotional beats and reveals were set up just to fall flat. Interesting characters with compelling histories lay lifeless on the page. There was just something dull about it that I don’t fully understand, since all the individual components felt like surefire winners.
I just think it wasn’t for me, which was disappointing considering how much I expected it to be for me.

An action packed story with a very unique setting—just not quite my favourite flavour.

I really liked the heists, the sneaking, the ‘magic’ / uniqueness of the protagonist, and the bits of wisdom sprinkled throughout the book (“Any given innovation that empowers the individual will inevitably come to empower the powerful much, much more.”) But the setting was depressing and the combinations of characters coming together seemed unrealistic and not fleshed out enough to me.
