What a fun ride of a book! I love the unique magic system, the characters and the plot of this story. I have to say that I've never read anything quite like it. Yes, we have rebellion, thieving, and all around mischief but we also have characters that are a blast to follow with some quite harrowing backstory.
I had heard that some of the dialogue in this book was immature and that put me off to reading it for quite some time but I'd say if you enjoy the humor of Locke or Lightbringer, this book will scratch that itch for you.
Very excited to get to the second book, especially after that ending.

Wonderful
The first two chapters really hooked me... and then the next two chapters immediately released me back into the sea. đź’€
I just can't do the magical cheesiness of talking objects. Especially if they're this silly. It's making this adult book feel almost middle grade.
I also had heard this book comped to Six of Crows, and it was definitely heavily evoking SoC for me, but without the fun crew and their relational dynamics. Just the one very solitary MC. Which I'm sure will change eventually, but yeah... nah.

I've already read The Divine Cities trilogy by Robert Jackson Benett before, and his style permeates throughout this book as well: fantastical world building that is delivered naturally to the reader without getting bogged down, fast-paced action and conspiracies that make your eyeballs pop out, and a fun and diverse cast of characters!
However, my only gripe with this book is that it has a big range of viewpoint characters, to the point that it can get a little hard to identify strongly with one or another. I really wished I could dig deeper in some of the characters' minds when all I've got is a fleeting impression of them - but perhaps the second novel will allow for more opportunities!

The idea and the world are very interesting.
But I am a little tired of “that street urchin girl who is an excellent thief because she is special and has a traumatic past” main protagonists, as well as repeating everything to the reader as soon as the POV changes. I don’t need the same thing described three times in two chapters. No one needs that. Also, the sudden romancing was so left of field that when it happened I was really surprised that the two involved characters actually had any deep feelings for one another.
The audiobook definitely made it more engaging and gave life to some of the characters.
Overall, an OK fantasy read with some good things but the things that grated me in Sanderson’s books are omnipresent here as well. Pains me to say that, after how much I enjoyed the Tainted Cup.
