I’m a sucker for a fun fantasy read, and this certainly hit that mark. This may be a niche pull, but if you’re a fan of Rhythm of War, specifically, you’ll really enjoy the magic system of Foundryside and the way the characters work to innovate in a fiddly manner within its boundaries. Furthermore, the two or three most central characters are very strong foundations upon which to continue building, and I also like some of the less-developed folks as well. Overall, a great balance of intra-book plot development and laying ground for a series-spanning story without taking away from either piece. It was a little silly at times, and I’m not entirely sold on some character motivations and development. So for that it’s only 4/5.

4.5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The world was interesting, the magic fascinating, and the characters intriguing. I loved Clef! I loved that we were shown people's character (rather than told). I loved that there were twists and turns toward the end. And then the ending- I HAVE to know what happens next! I can't wait to return to this world and find out where our beloved characters go from here.

Such an amazing book! I loved the characters and the story, but the well thought out and intriguing characters really knocked it out of the park for me! It felt like a mix of the Gentlemen Bastards and the Stormlight Archive...if you know what I mean.
