This is a very very heavy book, and I wish there had been trigger warnings (for domestic abuse, miscarriage and rape. Not in a historical sense, but in a modern day setting).

It was a beautifully written book, unraveling the story as it went. It was a very very slow beginning, with everything drawing together in the (fairly predictable) end. It was heartbreaking though, and more graphic than I would have liked (Axel/Miriam, especially).

I feel like it’s one of those books whose stories should be shared, but I regret reading it. I think you have to be in the right mindset, in a nice secure emotional place, else it rings raw. Reading about others grief is hard through the lens of your own.

Also, I felt like it’s so heavy because there is *so* much going on. Also, the atrocities of the concentration camps were out done by the graphic descriptions of Miriam’s narrative, which doesn’t feel right. A lot of it was because Frieda held so much hope, where Miriam did not (can I say again how heavy and graphic this book is?)

Blah. Unless awful misery is your thing, pass on this one.

This is, and I say this without a shred of hyperbole, the worst book I’ve ever read.

I can’t rate this, simply because this not my kind of book at all (only read it because it was a gift)

I bought this as a first read choice on Amazon, and thought it was about the Berlin Wall coming down. It is, but only in part...a small part. The book goes back to the Holocaust as the main character sits with her dying father, and discovers a tattoo on on his arm. Letters are found and read from a lost love that Mariam has never heard of.
It is a book about redemption, the horror of mankind, and the hope that change can matter.

I have read many books on this subject, and this is one of the most moving of all. I read through the evening and the day until I finished. I am not a woman that cries easily at all. I remember crying many years ago while reading Lassie Come Home...and now the Rabbit Girls
