I wish I could have read this book 11 years ago when I was a first time mom struggling with PPD and PTSD after a traumatic birth.

This book was chock full of information about how our brains work and how crucial the first few months of our lives are. If this book had been around in 2012 it would have helped me better understand what my baby needed from me and how I needed help to give it to them.

Even if you don’t think you’ve experienced anything traumatic in your life, you should still read this book.

I would highly recommend this book to just about everyone. It is a helpful review of the neuroscience of trauma alongside the personal experience of trauma, and does a wonderful job explaining the many facets of traumatic experiences- from the neurobiology to communal responses to therapeutic interventions. I was pleasantly surprised by the awareness of colonial thinking and westernized perspectives, and appreciated Dr. Perry’s appreciation, admiration, and acceptance of indigenous healing practices. The only thing holding it back from 5 stars was that I found it a little too cheesy at times. Would highly recommend the audiobook, as it is a conversation between the two authors, and very easy to listen to and understand, unlike many other popular neuroscience books.

Wow! What a book! Oprah and Dr. Perry’s conversations are intense but iconic; there was so much to digest and take in. Two parts struck out to me in particular (the latter being because I’m taking a flight later on today)! 😳
‘Crimes involving a Black suspect and a white victim make up only 10% of all crimes - but they account for 42% of what’s reported on television. When you’re watching the news and almost half of what you see is Black people committing crimes against white people, that’s going to influence the way you think when you see a Black person.’ ‘Many people have had the experience of feeling ‘exhausted’ after a day of travel, even if all they did was stand in a few lines and sit on a plane. This happens because your brain was continuously monitoring thousands of new stimuli. Remember: Activating your stress-response systems, even at a moderate level, for long periods of time is physically and emotionally draining.’
I do think the audio version may be slightly better for this book, only because it is so conversational and slightly clunky in written form because of that, but it was still very beautiful. I don’t feel that I could take it all in at once so I am definitely going to try and get an audio edition ✨
Thank you! 🥰
