twists and turns in the way only a Poirot novel can.

in the foreword, Agatha Christie says that this was one of Hercule Poirot’s favorite cases, but Captain Hastings “considered it very dull.” Christie then “wonder[s] with which of them [her] readers will agree” and I have to say I’m siding with Poirot! I might even go so far as to call this my new favorite of the series - or is that my recency bias talking?!

Not one of my favorite Poirot novels, but still one I've returned to a few times. The cast of characters is interesting, the herrings red and the little inclusion of some of Christie's other detectives is a fun way to contract Poirot's style. The solution is "entirely psychological" as is the denouement.

Can't bring myself to give this more than 3 stars because, as is usual for Christie, the actual writing is mediocre at best and Ariadne Oliver needs to be stabbed a few million times. But in terms of plotting, it's one of her best.

not my favourite. quite too mamy murders and murderers flying about and also too many interesting detectives. also i hate the way adriadne oliver (and especially her "feminism") are portrayed. smells like internalised misogyny, once more.

Bugger, thought I was on the right track but she fooled me again.
