This was certainly... something. I read it because I want to read as many  Čapek's works as possible, but if you only want to read a couple of them, this is definitely not the one you want, even though it's very short.
The first twelve chapters were fine. It looked really promising, then it... went downhill. But you were pretty much told that in the author's preface. The last chapter was funny tho.

Książka była... Ok?

This was a very obvious political and religious treatise, but I'm really glad I read it. It took some very serious topics and presented them in a lighter way, something more manageable than your run of the mill soap-boxing. The ideas in it were well-presented, though with humour, and there were a lot of places where I found myself highlighting quotes that stood out to me, for example:

Pg 103 (according to Kindle):
"We'll have no Japanese faith. If there's to be any faith, then it must be the Orthodox faith. And do you know why? First, because it is orthodox, and secondly, because or Czar so wills, and fourthly, because we, my friend, have the biggest army."

Which is pretty much how all wars start.

There were plenty of good quotes in here, but I'll end with one from, appropriately, the end:

Pg. 147 (according to Kindle):
"Everyone has the best of feelings towards mankind in general, but not towards the individual man. We'll kill men, but we want to save mankind. And that isn't right, your Reverence. The world will be an evil place as long as people don't believe in other people."

So true. Yep. I liked this book. Give it a shot. It's short and sweet.

this book is why I love to be in a book club...heard about it, but probably would not have read if without the book club behind me...

I would not consider this science fiction but most definitely satire where the author extrapolates the extreme into the future (10 to 30 years). Religion, corporations, governments, nationalistic behaviour, the atom bomb, world war: nothing is left un-skewered.

The fact that he was able to make all of this funny is amazing. Plus he wrote it in the early 20's (1922)with WW1 just having ended and Hitler not really a factor (yet).

It did go on and on explaining the world wars, esp., this part could have been tighter. Characters were cardboard-ish, only importance of the characters was to move the story along. Totally love the newsroom discussions of how to "spin" what was happening.

I would love to see the Cohen Bros make a movie of this book.
