My favorite book for many years

I'm not entirely sure what I think of this book. I did enjoy it. But I'm still trying to figure it out in some ways. There is a real sense of magical realism. There seemed to be some magic tied to the dress and its creation. But at the end, I was left wondering if there really was magic, or if people just wanted to believe there was. Overall I liked the story. But I'm not sure I'm satisfied with the ending.
I did like the way it starts with the ending, in a way, and tells both the story and the end in tandem. The audio production was excellent. And there always seems to be something magical about a story set in Australia.

Another lovely novel by Karen Foxlee, I really am enjoying her work. The Midnight Dress is a story set in a coastal Australian town, ripe with fruit and sugarcane, stifling with humidity and expectation. Rose arrives with her father and finds friendship, betrayal, hope and loss. It is magical realism, dark, poetic, sweet and sad, very enjoyable.
Something terrible has happened in the small beach town of Leonora, Australia, and this well-written book puts you right in the midst of murder mystery. The well-drawn characters include Rose who's a misfit in the community, thanks to her odd father and his wandering ways, her involvement with a strange old seamstress, Edie, and Pearl, a girl who reads romances and dreams about the man who runs the book exchange. Excellent reading, both for teens and adults!

One of the best books I've ever read. A frightening tale of a young girl who goes from town to town with her father in their camper van. She becomes friends with the prettiest girl in the town. Like all the teen girls she has to have a dress for the harvest festival. The woman teaches her to sew by hand and reveals the secrets of the mysterious hills along with her parent's love story. Tragic and inspiring.
This was a surprising teen book. I wasn't sure where it was headed when I first picked it up. Beautifully written, with some darker themes; though overall touching upon what it means to grow up. Enjoyed it.
Three cheers for not having a young adult book completely taken over by a love interest. Three hundred cheers for hardly even having a love interest at all. The occasional random POV shift was mildly irritating, but I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would; it was intricate and lovely, and never quite magical, and written in a style that didn't talk down to its audience at all. Plus, bonus, it wasn't about falling in love. It made me want to wear a pretty dress though.
The ending was predictable and Id have liked a little more adventure with this book. It was alright though.
