Nice start to a series but I really had to set aside some of my "oh c'mon" reactions during some of the early scenes between Sam and Nick and how she interacted with him during the time he was still considered a suspect in his best friend John's murder. The scenes where they go to search John's cabin and end up staying the night. Major eye roll. But otherwise, and as the story progressed, I like where they're headed.

I've reread this book so many times now and it never grows old. As the characters are wonderful, and the plot line gripping. Not to mention the start of Nick and Samantha's romance is totally engaging, and as starts to series go, I don't think I've come across better. So I would definitely recommend it to others.

I think I may have found another favorite hero - Nick Cappuano is just an amazing character. When he finds his boss dead (in a particularly nasty fashion - although don't worry - it isn't gruesome) he does what any red-blooded man would do. He gets sick! It was such a human reaction and it set up a book full of very human characters. Characters led by emotion instead of logic at times, characters that were doing their best to do good but not always succeeding, characters with a twisted mind and sense of justice.

The murder seems to have no suspects for a very long time. Then it seems to have too many suspects. I was constantly drawn into each person as they looked into them. Several times I was convinced they had found the guy only to find out otherwise. It wasn't until they very end that I was finally able to put a name to their prime suspect - just a few page before Sam does herself.

It was quite a wild ride - both with the investigation and the romance. Sam and Nick have some baggage that needs to be cleared up, plus the fact that it's unethical for her to get involved with a witness. They surpass these obstacles very nicely and are an amazing couple together. This is a series I'll have to start keeping up with, although since there are eight of them currently it may be awhile before I manage to do that.

I'm not usually a fan of police detective type books but I really enjoyed this one. The book kept me guessing and the couple was realistic. I love a second chance romance and that was the thing I liked about them from the very beginning but I also liked that they were honest and clear with each other and that they both wanted the other to successes without giving up on their futures because of the other. There was a lot going on in this book but it wasn't hard to follow and it wasn't hard to keep track of who was who in the investigation. Loved the writing style.

The narration was perfect. Enjoyed everything about it.

LOVed this series. I can't wait until the next book comes out.

Love the main characters, love the plots, love this series!!!

I’m sorry, but I could not find a redeeming quality for this book. I wanted to like it so bad, but I found the dialogue very cringy and elementary. I’m not convinced Sam and Nick have any chemistry. I was confused with the choice to include the POVs for characters that weren’t Sam or Nick. I thought this wasn’t necessary and made the book confusing.

On a more technical critique, Sam is supposed to be one of the best detectives. I don’t know how she didn’t see that Thomas was the killer sooner. Did she not check is mom’s credit card transactions? Ask where Thomas was? He had to have flown from chicago to DC. How did he pay? How did his mom not notice he was gone for a significant amount of time? It’s reasonable to make Thomas a person of interest, so I think these things should have been checked as soon as Sam found out John had a child.

I chose to read this book because I wanted a spicy mystery lol. Extremely underwhelmed.
