I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. It has obviously been sitting on my shelf for a while which is a shame because as soon as I started to read it I was into it. I love the dynamic between Sam and Nick. They had an immediate chemistry that oozed off the pages. And the mystery was definitely top notch. I had no idea who really killed the Senator and that is so unusual for me when I read a mystery. It may have taken me a long time to read this one, but I will definitely be continuing the series. A+ entertainment!
A solid read! I thoroughly enjoyed it and I liked the mystery. It kept me guessing. I also like that the story focuses more on the murder mystery than the romantic elements. I did have mixed feelings about certain things — like woo some chapters were rough. The sex scenes aren’t good so I would recommend skipping them
I got a copy of this book from NetGalley as a re-release in anticipation of the 10th book in this series being released. I have been reading her Green Mountain series and (mostly) enjoying it so I thought I'd request this book and see what's what. For me, it was three and a half stars. I honestly forgot I had read her other series so it was nice to have that change of voice. It was a little long at just over 400 pages and there was definitely some fat that could have been trimmed and the ending was a bit rushed, but I overall came away from this book with some good feelings.
Nick Cappuano is annoyed that his boss, Senator John O'Connor, is running late on the morning of an important bill. It's possible he overslept. Maybe he was up late with one of the many women that he's juggling. It's nothing new. But what Nick doesn't expect is to find is his long-time friend dead, murdered in a truly horrific manner.
Detective Samantha "Sam" Holland remembers Nick well. They went on one memorable date six years ago and she never heard from him again. But that's not the big issue in her life right now. It's the fact that she's been handed her first high-profile case after a shooting that went very, very wrong. Now she's juggling an incredibly difficult case, an old love who is a new suspect, and her own set of personal issues.

Pretty bland - and the guy seems like kind of a jerk?
this series is eerily similar to j.d. robb's "in death" series...it's not as good as those books but not bad either...the murder mysteries are a little less complicated in this series...
Note:2.5 star is not a bad rating for me unless I actually say so in my review box.
JD Robb's In Death books are def better with regards to depth of characterization and overall setting and mystery but this isn't all that bad or anything. Just a fun quick little read.

Fatal Affair is the first book in the Fatal Series. In this book, Senator John O'Connor's murder puts Detective Sam Holland in contact with the man that she had slept with for one night six years before but has never forgotten. Nick Cappuano has been working as chief of staff for Senator O'Connor and discovers his body in the Senator's apartment.
In the six years since their night together, Sam has been married and divorced, and her father has been shot and left a paraplegic. Sam has also recently come off of leave she had taken due to a controversial order she gave that left a teenager dead and a mother blaming Sam for his death. Sam and Nick must deal with all of these things as they plow through the evidence and suspects in the Senator's death.
This story has lots of details, suspects, and obstacles that the lead characters must work through. The story is so jam-packed that it is difficult to keep all of it straight. Even with all of the clutter, the ending is a satisfying one, making this an overall good story. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Fatal Justice.

DNF
I'm not rating this as I haven't read enough of it (I gave up, for now, on chapter 8) to properly rate it. I'm putting it down as DNF for now. The story didn't draw me in as much as I expected it to so I decided to give up for now and maybe give it another try some other time.
