So I finished this book yesterday but I'm so into it, I started the second book right away! I've been looking for a contemporary series that has recurring characters and I think I finally found the one!
Fatal Affair begins six years after One Night With You when a United States senator is found by Nick Cappuano, gruesomely murdered in his bed. I'll spare you the details on how because you'll be wanting to read this book one day. Sam Holland is sergeant detective cop on the case and charged with investigating this murder. She also ends up dealing with Nick and reliving that night six years ago when they had a glorious evening together and then Sam never heard from him again even though he promised he would call. She is trying to keep a line between her personal life and her professional life especially since she's up for possible promotion to lieutenant.
I seriously adore the world that Marie has built. She puts a disclaimer that this is a Metro PD that she built on her own and is not to be related to how an actual PD operates because as we know situations always vary. I completely connected with her characters. Sam has dyslexia that she's kept well hidden and is a workaholic to the point that she forgets to eat and sleep and even gets stress stomach pains. Nick has finally made a name for himself after having a crappy childhood upbringing and now his best friend in the world is murdered and the one that got away is back in his life so he's quite emotionally conflicted. And then you have Skip Holland, Sam's dad, a quadriplegic who is so proud of his daughter and gives him a reason to continue living after a tragedy landed him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Little things like that along with the actual plot kept me riveted. I'm very impressed by this author and I really don't know what else to say except I'm in love with this series and will continue to read it until the books run out. It's like reading all my favorite drama TV shows. Also, she's really good at keeping you guessing when it comes to trying to determine who the murderer is. I thought I had it down in the first book but I was completely surprised. It's like your right in the mind of Sam and the other cops trying to pieces together and sometimes getting it wrong. I definitely recommend these books if you love mystery crime dramas featuring recurring characters with romance sprinkled in between.

4 1/2 stars
I know I am late to the party on this series. Friends have told me to read it for years, I even had the first 6 or so books purchased and sitting on my ereader. Why I never read it I have no clue, but in a wave of "cleaning" of my ereader I decided to try it.
Oh my what I can say is I am happy there are a bunch of books in this series out so I am not waiting for the next.
I enjoyed this book. Loved Sam and Nick and their "family". Some plot points were far to easy, and a few things dealt with too quickly. I am okay with the points left hanging as this is a series and I understand they will carry forward.
I have read books from the authors Gansett and Vermont series, I find this writing a little different. It will be interesting to follow the same characters through a few books.

Meh. Was ok. Liked Nick, Sam was just ok, got on my nerves a bunch. Typical romantic suspense with a lot going on, but didn't love it. May try the next book, but not high on my TBR.
