I enjoy Steinbeck's poetic writing which weaves a story which is about the characters but on a greater scale is about the inevitabilities of life those characters will face. Grief, loss, the cycle of life and death through the eyes of a growing adolescense took me back to when I was young and grasping desperately for understanding of these things myself.

I feel almost the same as I did after finishing Hesse. Not my favorite from Steinbeck, but this man is incapable of crafting an uninteresting story.

Steinbeck's ability to capture the reader's heart and then shatter it both astounds and frustrates me. He is incredibly talented, however, and the poetry of his description is rivaled by few.
