This was great! Not in a positive, uplifting, feel-good way. But a “wow this is really how life is feeling right now and WOW these illustrations really hit home” way.

I had always been hesitant to pick up the OG 1984 because it struck me as highly academic. This was a perfect adaptation that I enjoyed.

I wanted to revisit the 1984 story, but because I struggle to reread books and didn't love the 1984 novel (it needed a rewrite and an editor, in my opinion), I decided to check out the graphic novel version from the library. This was a delightful read because I enjoy the concept of 1984, but I felt that Orwell's composure depleted my enjoyment; however, Nesti's images and this abridged version of the original text was much more appealing and digestible for me. The social criticism in the story is continuously (and scarily) relevant to contemporary society, but I just want to make sure that I underline the fact that it is not a critique of socialism/communism as Orwell himself was a socialist; this is a scathing criticism of totalitarian and authoritarian government. I highly recommend the 1984 story, and since I did not love the original novel format, this graphic novel is a great way to consume it without Orwell's slightly drab writing in the novel.
