I was pulled in right away and flew through this book! I love Henry’s writing style and characters, with this being the second book I’ve read from her she’s firmly put herself on my auto buy author list!

I absolutely adored the Michigan references!! I also loved the subtle nod to a Hope College staple but I will be gatekeeping it 😂 I enjoyed the banter and the slow burn for the romance.

I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much reading a romance book
Also I wouldn’t classify this as having a third act breakup which made me so happy! Without getting too spoiler-y, for me a third act break up means the characters separate for 1 week or more and this wasn’t the case.

A beautiful novel about love, loss, grief, and new beginnings. I adored everything about this book; the characters are well written and had great developments along the way, the writing held my attention, the chemistry was amazing, well written dialogue to make you feel all the emotions, and the setting was so clearly written that I felt nostalgic for my home state where I’ve spent many childhoods at Lake Michigan 💙

My one very minor “negative” is the ending. I liked it well enough (I read the US edition for reference) but after finding out what the UK ending is, I would’ve preferred that one. It was a good ending but the UK ending makes more sense for Gus and January!

I have so many favorites for this month which is amazing but will be a challenge for picking my top pick at the end of July 🙈

Spice level: 🌶️ (1.5/3)
Tropes: rivals to lovers, forced proximity

I enjoyed how meta this book was. in many ways it was a book about writer’s block and the process of writing a story. i like that the story didn’t sugarcoat on the one hand and also didn’t exaggerate the characters struggles too far so that they became unsympathetic. i wasn’t much until the way the sexual aspects of the protagonist’s relationship was described. I would have loved to have gotten more of a glimpse of what Gus’s writing had been like and how he would have written his romance novel than the more general look we got. i do plan on checking out more of the authors work in the future, though.

Beach Read for the beach 🏝️ (or pool in my case) such an easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️’s for the second Emily Henry book I’ve picked up! She honestly never misses - plot littered with romance tropes in the best way and characters you root for the entire way through, all tied up with that small town vibe and a cast of supporting characters you can’t help but fall in love with too. Pete and Maggie 🥺 (iykyk!) love love loved this book 🩷

This book totally made me cry in the last 20 pages. I love Emily Henry’s writing, I get a solid romance, characters with depth, and it’s not all about the spice (though I’m totally here for it!). This book’s exploration of grief and reconciling the different sides we know of people (friends, family, and lovers) was really interesting and felt so real. I’m not usually a fan of the miscommunication trope, but Henry’s use of it is self-aware and feels so real- I would have held back from telling all too! And the miscommunication isn’t the main basis for the plot. So it contributed to the depth of the characters but didn’t draw out the plot. I ate this book up!

I've mostly seen very positive reviews for this book, but it was just okay for me. I thought that January and Gus did have good chemistry and I enjoyed their banter, and I liked the way their story ultimately ended, but I didn't feel overly connected to either of them, and found them both a bit irritating at times.

This is much more a serious story with a romance heading through it rather than a more lighthearted full-on romance - which I generally prefer, but it bugged me that this is marketed as a romcom when it's really not. It's funny in a few parts, but a lot of it is pretty depressing, and much of the focus is on both January and Gus dealing with their own traumas, and I just wish that that was how it had been advertised, especially as it does mostly do a good job of discussing trauma and healing and several dark topics.

Also, a lot of the story is also based around January coping with the fact that her father had been having an affair before he died, and I understand that that's a difficult thing to deal with, but I personally felt as if how difficult it was for January was so over-egged and just a bit unbelievable, especially due to the lacklustre way that part of that thread of the story ended up culminating.

I did like Emily Henry's writing, and as I've said, there are parts of the story that I did really like, but ultimately I just didn't love this book the way I wanted to.

Beach Read was next to impossible to put down. I love the way she writes characters so you really feel like you know who they are. Typical romance tropes are incorporated without feeling tired, played out, or unnatural. At times I found January frustrating, however this didn’t make me dislike her. Nothing in the book feels unbelievable or like it came out of nowhere as can often be the case in romance novels. No one writes romance like Emily Henry.

The one thing that annoyed and disappointed me was that Gus doesn’t write a proper romcom or romance novel, but just litfic with a romance plot line.
