4.5⭐️’s…as I read this book, I lived back in the past with my Dad, who was an avid tennis player and taught me all about tennis. I am not a tennis player but remember watching Daddy play and watching matches on TV with him. So I thoroughly enjoyed this book although at first, Carrie was too damn arrogant (but I guess you must be in some ways to succeed at such a high level in tennis). I loved Javier and Bowe and Gwen and Nikki…I just loved this book!

I loved a lot of this book, but honestly, Carrie's dad dying--of a heart attack, after heart-related health issues already being used as a plot point--just felt a little trite. It's such a common plot line for older male characters, I feel like, and also really robbed readers of the chance to see a compicated but loving father-daughter relationship play out. I think my issue with this plot--not unique to Carrie Soto--is that once the older male character dies, they become kind of a sainted figure that other characters achievments are nebulously "for," rather than a rich and compex human being with flaws that we get to explore.

I love TJR and I thought the end of this book was great but for the first 80% I felt like basically nothing was happening and the main character was just self-destructing. I get that it's trying to make a statement about how women are allowed to behave in the public eye vs men, and fair enough, but her other books do that too and this one didn't have a good story to carry that message along.
