The format can be confusing at first as Ocean tends to spice it up, but you'll get used to it quickly. Has such a creative use for symbolism and analogy that just guts you in at times.

I think the poetry was well-written but some of the topic matter wasn’t really for me. I went in thinking this was more of a series of poems tying into family struggles and grief but I found a lot of it lewd and about other things. That’s fine but just not what I expected.

I wish I read this after On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous instead

A beautiful, deeply passionate collection of poetry that I have a sneaking suspicion I'm just not smart enough to comprehend fully. For that reason, I give it a 3.75. Some of my favorite lines;

He dies at the party where everyone laughs and all you want to do is go into the kitchen and make seven omelets before burning down the house. (pg 40)

Maybe we pray on our knees because god only listens when we're this close to the devil (49)

Don't be afraid, the gunfire is only the sound of people trying to live a little longer and failing. (82)

and so what if my feathers are burning, I never asked for flight. (84)
