I found this book to be difficult to read but even more difficult to put down because there were A LOT of parts I related to this story. I wish I had this book closer to
my father’s passing
. I wonder if it would have helped me make better choices and treat myself better.

I don’t know how people who haven’t experienced these major themes
death (specifically one that makes you lose your center) and/or parentification
will feel about this book; I hope that they will let Jess’s strong writing teach them and/or prepare them. I also don’t know how those who have will either I guess. Will it be too hard? As such, I can’t recommend this book but I wish people did so that I have someone to lean on and discuss it.

It took me a minute to get into this book into really understand this family. There is a lot of building up of different events in this person’s life so that you can understand everyone around them and that took me some time. But once I understood her more and her father, I was really interested in where the story would go. I feel like the story is extremely relatable for people trying to get a job right now and take care of themselves and their family at the same time.

Brilliant debut and coming-of-age story. I was not prepared for Maddie and now I wish I could be her friend. Some parts witty and hilarious, other parts raw and heartbreaking. I devoured in days, would highly recommend.

Thanks to Libro FM for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for a review .

This was such a compelling story with great writing and so much heart. I really liked Maddie, she felt so realistically flawed and nuanced and you could tell from the author's writing how much they care about her as a character. Even though she made mistakes and poor decisions, I couldn't help but root for her, and I was so pleased when she finally stood up for herself and spoke candidly to her mother and brother about their absentee behavior.

This started slow for me but I liked where it went. Maddie is complicated and lovable and relatable at times and just all around a character you truly feel you’re in her head. 4.5 stars rounded up.

Maddie is just so damn relatable. What a beautiful, sad and emotional coming of age story. I'm going to be thinking about this book for a while.

This book was fantastic (and the audio is excellently narrated)! I went in fairly blind and ended up listening to the whole audiobook in one day. Maddie is such a well written character, and manages to balance her anxieties, her naivete, and her intelligence so realistically. I loved the ruminations on grief, challenging family dynamics, parentification, delayed adulthood, and modern dating, among other themes. This one is sticking in my mind for sure. I look forward to reading more from Jessica George I hope!
