What a breath of fresh air! A beautifully, heartbreaking and hopeful experience!  The tears and laughter were both appreciated.

Jessica George’s debut novel shares the story of Maddie as she balances family drama, being a caretaker for her ill dad and the corporate world. After finally deciding to move out of her family home, Maddie’s world starts to fall apart, leaving her to pick up the pieces.

This was a beautiful piece by George and was a spectacular debut novel. It felt so personal, I’ve never read a book and felt so seen in so many ways. The complexities of immigration of family, expectations within love and relationship, the life-sucking performance at the office; all of these feel overwhelming and suffocating at times as we experience them through Maddie.

This is a really strong debut novel. I enjoyed spending some time in Maddie’s world. Her humor is engaging, and watching her become herself feels like a privilege.

The story seems like it’s going to be one thing, and then it takes a turn that I, at least, (and certainly Maddie) was not expecting. The only thing that took me out of the story a bit were the discussions that, while relevant and important, didn’t feel organic, but more like the author’s voice. There were moments (Jo and Maddie’s hair comes to mind) where it was done so beautifully that the other moments stuck out a bit.

Jessica George is a writer I will be looking out for. I can’t wait to see what she writes next.

this was a tough read. although i obviously can’t personally relate to the cultural or racial aspects of the MC’s journey, her role as the over-achieving, under appreciated, people-pleasing younger daughter keeping the family together is TOO relatable. her story was incredibly moving and heartbreaking not only because i could relate too deeply but also because she was just so lovable and such a complex, well-written character. this isn’t the usual genre i go for, but i had to pick this up based on the hype and i’m really glad i did. it felt cathartic and like i hurt and healed a little bit alongside Maddie. this one will definitely stick with me for a while!
