Old Wounds

a little heavy-handed on the extended metaphor, but i do think that for folks who really enjoy socially-minded horror that this will be a hit. i also think the gore here was pretty solid, but would've loved to see a little more monstrosity, as i feel like the true action didn't pick up until really close to the end of the book.

Old Wounds follows Erin and Max, two trans teens escaping to California so that Max can finally transition and live freely. As they become stranded in middle-America, they encounter a terrifying legendary creature who hunts girls and the men who make sure the creature is fed.

I flew through this book and enjoyed every second. Very early on, I found myself feeling wistful, wishing I could read parts I’d already read again as I was still reading, sad that it would end, and that I could never read it for the first time again. I instantly loved it. Full of humour, heart, and heroism. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

The characterisation and relationships are fantastic, and they clearly care deeply for each other despite their past. The  creeping dread built expertly and I was gripped until the satisfying end. I also found it interesting to anticipate if the creature would be a transphobe or an ally, or real at all. Humans, as usual, are the real monsters.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

I thought Max was kinda constantly in the wrong and got them into that situation. (By that I mean taking the off roads and blaming Erin for everything even tho it wasn’t her fault and she was even picking up his slack!)
I liked how we never found out Erin and Max’s dead names

The meditations on gender in this book are really interesting, and, without being much of a horror reader, I found the subversions of horror tropes to be well done. We love a trans final girl. I do think the pacing of the book felt overly frontloaded however, and there's a minor plot hole that kept bugging me. Good for 16+.

DID NOT FINISH: 0%

 Audiobook- narrorator not bearable.

The cover had me thinking it was about clowns? The synospis told me this was not the book for me. Couldn't get past the first few sentences with the narrorator and after reading both positive and negative reviews with spoilers. I am glad I did not invest. The time as this is not the book for me. Not leaving a rating because I didn't read it.And because it could be for someone else, but it's definitely not for me.
