This has an excellent collection of mini mysteries to use in a close- reading unit to teach middle school age students meta cognitive reading strategies. Since teaching those strategies is useless when completed in a one-at-at-time manner, students can be introduced to all and be forced to pick and choose from them as they try to solve the mystery: rereading, predicting, asking questions, taking notes to keep track of information, etc.

Since I am using these with Long term ELL, I flagged the ones that did not require much prior knowledge to be solved.
