I got stumped reading through some of these stories, but some of them were gripping. I didn't stop reading them when I started. However, because of that range, I'm giving this three stars. However the writing is easy to read overall. I loved some of the characters and how they viewed the world they were wrote having. This made me want to read more chinese literature. :D

One day Goodreads will give us half stars to rate with. This isn't normally the type of book I go for, but after reading so many reviews I knew I had to give it a try. I do like a good anthology. Every single story was captivating and enthralling and easy to fully dive into. The characters were all different and the stories were incredible. Absolutely add this to your TBR list. It's so wonderful.

If I remember right this is only the second book I ever read by a Chinese author writing about china. It also was the first short stories collection I actually enjoyed. What a great book with so many very different stories from this large country. I especially liked the first three stories which are also available online (in another GR review the links are listed).
The first story is narrated by a young man who tells the story of his twin sister, a famous Chinese blogger who gets arrested regularly - many stories by te-ping Chen are told by people who are merely bystanders and are watching the story unfold just as the reader does.
There also was a story about a new fruit which made everyone feel happy - but when the crop of the new season arrived everything changed.
Some of the stories felt really strange and took weird turns - but I loved that. Such a good book.
