this is the worst thing i've read in a long time. do women actually contemplate killing themselves over rejection from a man as often as this collection suggests? i have enjoyed Taddeo's previous work but her writing here is atrocious, and if these stories are a reflection of the way she sees the world (LA and New York), i feel truly sorry for her.

DID NOT FINISH

Too much talk about women wanting to be skinny and being wanted by men. Feel like that isn’t the genre for me

Liked the last story the best, “A Suburban Weekend” - bumped up my rating.

dreadful, and i’m really sad about it. i’ve enjoyed taddeo’s work in the past so i was really excited for this one. i expected something along the lines of her previous novel, animal, maybe even similar to emma cline’s the girls. basically tragic girls living their tragic lives during a hot la summer. the short stories were pretty much just that, but they were so bland and boring that i couldn’t enjoy a single one. not even one of them truly stuck with me, i don’t think i could even summarise what happens in all nine stories. i can’t really pinpoint the problem, maybe it was the prose, maybe it was the unoriginal plot… idk. but i definitely wouldn’t recommend this and i’m glad it’s over.

Lisa Taddeo is a great writer, in terms of technique. She formulates phrases with creative wit and linguistic panache. However, in this collection, she could have drawn on a little more of a diverse portfolio of emotions. Ghost Lover is a set of short stories that almost all focus on sex, unrequited love, or some form of one or the other. Sure, I can appreciate a themed collection, but it seemed like the characters were just the same ones with different names in each story. I don't deny that I enjoyed reading this book, not at all. But when you read the synopsis of the title story, and then you read the story itself, you're probably going to be disappointed. No spoilers here, just a word of caution.
