Blatant symbolism makes the reader able to discern exactly what is going to happen and what means what from the get-go. There is no surprise or character development, just the descent into the inevitable.

this is my first john steinbeck work. it's also the first time i read something with this setting, which was refreshing. john steinbeck is masterful when it comes to painting a picture, you could feel it, smell it, see their slow life as it plays out on the fields.
despite the book being slow, it is easy to finish it in one sitting. i did feel a little bit less excited as i read because things felt too predictable but perhaps knowing the impending doom is just a way to make us know these dreams will only remain as so. there is no big win that will change their lives upside down. there is no happy ending we'll see where all these frustrating day-to-day situations, this kind of life becomes magically solved.
lennie is a gentle-hearted big guy who can't handle things very gently and he trusts george with his whole being. George's sanity, his anchor and dream is all built through lennie's companionship. he's just so used to him, that he's willing to deal with all lennie's companionship encapsulates.
we already get an idea of the challenge of living as a ranch boy, the loneliness, it comes with and how they want to be different.
does it bring me a comfort that until the very end, lennie never got to experience the loneliness a life on the fields bring? the insanity Crooks speaks of? or that he didn't experience the moment workers know they should give up on their dream? when they are only voiced as 'fooling around'?
