When Abi's father, Theo, marries Polly, she must get used to a new life in a new house with a stepmother and two stepbrothers. The family moves into a new ivy-covered home with a Narnia lamp. The house exudes what her Granny Grace calls green magic and it enchants Abi. Shortly after moving in though, the children begin to have odd experiences. Abi reads alone, only to find herself falling, literally, into the book. Louis, wanting to not being alone, longs for an owl, but instead is a mysterious cat-like creature appears at his window. Louis befriends, to a certain point, the creature and names him Iffen. Iffen begins to grow and become more and more real leading Abi, Max, and Louis on an adventure to uncover the secrets of their new home and its magic.

This book came in my OwlCrate Jr. box, and it has one of my favorite covers of 2020. It is absolutely gorgeous, and I'll admit that I picked this book up to read solely based on its cover. The book itself though fell a little flat for me. I loved the idea of books coming to life and children being pulled into books, but I just felt that this book was a little jumbled. To start, I wasn't sure who the main protagonist is as the book abruptly and frequently switches narrators. It also has an eerie tone and is a tad bit darker than I was expecting.

This book is one amazing children's contemporary, mixing fantastic elements with the very real event of a patchwork family growing together.

Loved it. The only question mark that I felt at times was that the parents seemed a little bit too perfect to be true, but the three kids involved, they rock.

This book has one of my favourite covers of all time, but unfortunately I didn't love the inside. I mean, it was fine??? Didn't blow me away, but I didn't hate it either! I really enjoyed the main characters growth in learning to love and appreciate the new members of her family though! I just wanted to protect lil Louis at all costs! Be warned though, if you're recommending this to younger readers, it's a bit of a creepy read!

trigger warnings: loss of loved ones (in the past), mild fantasy violence, absent parents.

Really nice book that takes you into the worlds of other books. I would have loved to live in the Ivy house. I think the family was sweet with their relationships being blended. I also think it was really cool that Abi, Theo and Grandma are from Jamaica.
