I don't know why I expected anything else but The Thursday Murder Club had me literally laughing out loud 4 times in the first chapter!

After the initial surprise at the witty tone I settled in and enjoyed the plot, the characters and the writing until the very end. Despite its lightheartedness and humour the club take on multiple murders, dealing with organised crime, large corporations and disgruntled officers. There's even a sit in protest at one point. There's plenty of mystery and emotion, a little suspense, a twist or two and plenty fodder for many more books from the Thursday Murder Club.

Throughout the book there is a more serious thread of justice and a distinct but friendly warning never to underestimate pensioners. Thursday Murder Club is respectful of the older generation, of grief, of loneliness and of community. We are always laughing with and not at and we are always empathising not sympathising.
The story isn't without darkness but it's never gratuitous.

I loved it and I can't wait for the next book.

Really charming. Was a little worried when I started the book as the characters felt a little cliched, but there was a bit of unexpected fullness as the book went on.
