The idea of the dual narrative here felt right, but personally I didn’t enjoy reading the majority of Marion’s sections of whom was the majority narrative. I feel quite conflicted over the book because of this as I was wholly uninterested more often than not. It was definitely a predictable read and personally I found it extremely slow as well- like it required a lot of effort to complete. Yet the book does accomplish expressing how difficult it was to be gay during the time period thus you definitely feel for the characters such as Patrick and Julia in this sense.

oh my god. My heart is ACHING and it's literally shattered. This story was so incredibly good and breathtaking; i read the book in a span of 2 days and could literally not put it down.
I'm talking max addiction level here.
I seriously can't wait for the movie, but the book itself is already so draining but beautiful. it made me really emotional, and i'll read it again and again and again. i really fell in love with it, even tho it's harsh and shows the most unfair sides of society and law and people having sticks up their arses.

I went into this novel expecting a bisexual non monogamous romance, perhaps a bit sad given the time period it's set in. In reality, it's a tragedy about three deeply flawed people and the choices they make. Perhaps there was a little love in there, but it reads more as obsession, especially because one of said three people never gets to have his own voice. Despite not fully knowing what I was signing up for, though, I enjoyed the book, watching how these three lives became entangled and played out in their historical context. I think Roberts did a good job of making the entire book a collection of written accounts and diary entries from the characters and pulling that together at the end, or at least more successfully than the other book I've read using that device, Where'd You Go Bernadette. However, since the book ended up not being more character study than romance, I wish she had given us more. Maybe Tom's own voice/perspective? Or even just more details or depth of some sort.

This book was actually so painfully boring. The majority of it was Marion talking about her experience as a teacher and I struggle to comprehend what relevance all of that had to the “plot”. Patrick’s parts were the only good parts, they actually made sense according to the general message of the book.

This book was definitely not what I was expecting!! I enjoyed reading it but I wish we got more Tom & Patrick. Also the ending?!? Hello, Bethan Roberts, I need more then that. Marion definitely got on my nerves at points, I found myself physically sighing *marion* a lot throughout the book.
