This author is rapidly going from "probably the next one will suck - she can't keep this up" to "buy everything she writes without thinking" territory.
I don't know what to say. Everything is done so perfectly, at such a perfect pace and with such a perfect balance between fighting and romance, introspection and action, and the mystery still manages to stay elusive until the end.

AMAZING!! If you have not read this series yet - do your self a favour & go do it! Chess continues to evolve and develop. There are some eye opening scenes in this book and it can drag you right down into the depths of Downside but Chess's spirit will lift you back up. There are some dynamic scenes between her and Terrible too and even though I thought I had this one figured out it threw me a huge curve ball!
Each book keeps getting better. I didn't want to put this one down. And boy am I thankful that I've just started this series, because I can't imagine having to wait two years for the next book. Twelve days is too long!
I love Chess and I love Terrible. And I love this series. 'Nuff said!

My favorite of the series so far! Can't wait to read more! (And I'm reluctant to start reading anything else because I think it will be a let-down after being so engrossed in this series!)
yesssss. finally. that was so awkward but so so worth it.

I'm rooting for Chess to get away from using so many drugs. She mentions almost every time she takes a pill how they can mess with her magic, and how she has to make sure she keeps taking them so she doesn't crash, and how they keep her tied to some really crappy people...it just seems to make sense that she'll have to kick her habit eventually.
My question after finishing this book is, if "Lauren" was wearing a disguise the whole time to look like the murdered Lauren Abrams, then why didn't Chess sense it like she sensed the magic that made "Lauren" look like Chess? I kind of feel as though I haven't had most of the magic in these books explained well enough so that when there are fight scenes involving it, I just can't understand all the action.
I actually enjoy Terrible's way of speaking. I like the turns of phrase that seem to have developed.
I'm so happy Terrible and Chess finally stopped lying to each other and themselves how much they love each other, and I know it will be a long road but I hope they tell each other more truths in the future.

I want to like this series, it has so much going for it, but I just can't get into these past two books like I could get into the first one. I loved the first book in this series so much because the world was unique, the main character was unique, the mystery was entertaining, and the worldbuilding set a good pace. City of Ghosts started out well with more about the Lamaru and the goings on in the church which I loved, but the pace was just too frantic for me. Chess is in danger, finding a dead body, getting chased, and doing drugs constantly with no break. She doesn't really eat or sleep or think. The only break in the action is when Chess decides to turn on the self loathing. It is completely warranted and understandable since she has been screwing up majorly, but I didn't enjoy it. Maybe it's because I don't really like Chess and don't find myself 100% invested in the story. I thought Chess was multidimensional and strong, but she really isn't. She's pretty much a junky and that's about it. Her job isn't really that interesting anymore, and the novelty has worn off for me. City of Ghosts isn't first person, but the pace is so frantic that it feels like it's being told by Chess while she is high. If there was more exploration of the church, more details about the Lamaru and less running around from danger to danger then I would like this series much more. Many urban fantasy books are more action than plot and more shock value than character development. I would really like this to slow down a bit, it's just so hard to focus when 10 things are being thrown at you at once.
Creating a truly unique world among the glut of genre fiction books out there, Stacia Kane is a witch herself to have given us characters who should be hard to like, let alone love. But love them you do, with all their faults, weaknesses, sorrows. Her unflinchingly stark world provides a unique backdrop for a supernatural/metaphysical storyline.
A totally diverting read, Chess, Terrible and crew stay with you long after you put the book down. Kane's world provides food for thought about how much a person can endure and be expected to overcome, and a refreshingly frank take on addiction.
