A simple recall of events that were powerfully disturbing in and of themselves. A perspective needed to change the way we treat the mentally ill. How horrifying to think this treatment was the norm?

This is an amazing story. It has a very sensationalist air, which is not so different from some of today's writings. I don't know if everything in it is true, but it certainly could be. If one reads fiction of the time, some stories describe the same unlawful imprisonment and relatives who push off rebellious or unwanted women to lunatic asylums. So does life imitate art or vice versa? Shocked that women can be pushed off to lunatic asylums judt because they couldn't speak English! This book also includes the reporter's experience trying to find a job at agencies for working women, and her experience as a 'white slave' in factories during times when labour law was still in its infancy. Women really got the short end of the stick then, and we're still getting the short end today in some countries. Really admire Nellie's courage and pursuit of truth.

The copy I read was faded and nearly illegible; that said, the story was very moving and I found it to be accurate when compared to Miss Bly’s original account.
