DNF.

I don't know if it's because I just don't like Lorraine Heath's style of writing. This is one of three books I've read by her, though I did like Lord of Wicked Intentions, but not Once More My Darling Rogue.

I got bored of this one. I think I found Grace to be kind of bland and that killed it for me.

The first book in the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James series. I’m on a hit and miss rollercoaster so far with LH. The previous to last book I read I loved with a fiery passion, the last book I read was a DNF. So, I had no idea if I was going to like this one or not going in.

And you know what, it was okay. I was enjoying it well enough, friends to lovers is a fav trope of mine so I was down with that. Then the heroines reason for wanting love was revealed and the way it meshed with the hero’s fear was fantastic. There were layers to this book that I didn’t expect in the first half, so this book got better as I read on.

I’m happy to say this one from LH was a winner for me, not an five star read, but quite good and cleverly put together, more so than you would think as you launch into it.

An ok read read, but not without serious annoyances. Moreover, it has a trope that I Do Not Care For, pairing a jaded widower who is hung up on his dead wife for most of the book with a young ingenue that's known the hero since she was a child and has loved him forever (I just find it weird when a guy falls for a girl he saw as a child right up to the point he starts wanting her).
SpoilerThe hero's constant, adamant refusal that he couldn't POSSIBLY love the heroine as she deserved to be loved grew ridiculous, intolerably stupid. I didn't much care for him and his philandering drama-queen, navel-gazing ways.
Not a knock against anyone who likes this trope, but I do not, and had the summary been clearer about what the setup of the romance really was, I wouldn't have read the book. The characters were boring and mostly unsympathetic until the very end, the added melodrama of the ending felt pasted-on, the "bad guy," a third character, was a disappointing plot device, complete cardboard.
If you stumble upon this book, do read it
Spoilerespecially for the unusual topic of breast cancer in historical England--although it is extremely undeveloped
, but certainly, no need to seek it out.

Recommended for breast cancer survivors or people that like romance where the hero is a widower.

Lorraine Heath has written some great romances but this one didn’t engage me.

This book was so interesting. I have been loving Lorraine Heath this year. This is my 6th book by her and they have each been so unique. Taking on different issues and taking them on in a Historical context.

I heard about this book on the Fated Mates podcast with Sarah Maclean and I knew I wanted to read this one.

While I did find the issue it took on to be fascinating, that unique issue is what made the book bearable. I really wasn't a huge plan of the plot and I don't really like moping widowers and men who believe they can never love again because someone died. That is just a specific dislike of mine.

Also, the steam wasn't quite there for what I am used to from Lorraine Heath.

So I am giving this 4 stars, because it was interesting and different, but I've read better.
