I am sorry to be harsh. This book does have good qualities, but I had trouble seeing them through all the eye-rolling.

I really enjoyed the steampunk theme/genre that was added to the book that’s set in Scotland in the 1800s. Another good thing about the book was that it was great to see that the main character Aileana wasn’t in love with the first male character around her age that was introduced (other than the fact that she had a crush on him when she was younger) but to be honest, from what I’ve read in the first book, I feel like she’d be a better match with Gavin than Kiaran at this point. We don’t really get much of a feel of Kiaran( in my opinion) but hopefully we’ll get to see a lot more of him in book two.

Meh. Tbh, there's not really much to this book to rate. I think I've read too many fantasy books along the same plot line (except better) to give it any more than a 2 (.5? Maybe?) rating.
I finally read this book after one of my students tore through it and it's sequel. It wasn't what I expected- but it was still pretty good.
Aileanna is a lady from a well-to-do Scottish family. Her life is turned upside down when she witnesses her mother's murder as a faerie rips out her heart and leaves Aileanna cloaked in her mother's crimson blood.
This ignites a never ending fit of rage within Aileanna as she vows to seek vengeance. She receives training from a fae named Kiaran who teaches her how to battle and kill faeries. (It is noted that Kiaran kills his kind because of a mysterious vow he took and a faerie's vow may not be broken.) Her friend Catherine helps her without knowing the true reasoning behind her disappearances and mysterious scars. In the middle of everything, we also find Catherine's brother (Gavin-also a Seer) must ask for Aileanna's hand in marriage to keep the family name from ruin.
Kiaran and Aileanna learn that an impending apocalypse is dawning whereas all evil faeries imprisoned years ago will escape to the earth in hopes of destroying it. In the midst of all of this, Aileanna strives to keep the fascade of wealthy Scottish lady in waiting attending balls and tea times.
I honestly didn't love the book but still want to see what comes next so I plan on reading the sequel.

I just picked this up at the library by chance, seeing it near another book I was looking for. I remembered seeing it on Goodreads and that I had marked it as 'want to read' so I thought why not! So glad I borrowed it then and there. This was a great book.
I don't usually go for steampunk novels (and didn't realise this was one until i started it) but I'm glad that didn't stop me. Liked the mix of Scottish heritage, high society, steampunk, fae, kickass heroine and of course a bit of romance! It was also a fresher, more 'real' take on faeries and fae than I've read before.
