A salsa recipe, drawing on music, written as a poem with bilingual text, WITH Duncan Tonatiuh's illustrations? YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

This is a lighthearted poem that explains how to make salsa. It likens the ingredients to musical instruments. The illustrations are very fun. I only wish that the recipe was written out at the end or there were a few more specifics about the proportions.

I fell into these pages, could taste and smell the salsa. The comparison of flavors to music and nods to ancestors, earth, culture and ingredients was beautiful.

I love the culture Duncan Tonatiuh's illustrations represent, the whispers of indigenous South America spread across pages of color and text. Poetry depicting how molcajetes and salsa came to be, told with rhyme and dance. Written in Spanish and English, readers glimpse culture and tradition. I could see this being a great companion in any salsa or Spanish immersion lessons for children.

I'm a huge fan of both authors here, Duncan Tonatiuh for his art, and Jorge Argueta for his words. This story blends a real life recipe for salsa with the dance and music that is salsa. It's fun to read and has sound effects incorporated. It's bilingual and is firmly rooted in Latinx culture. Highly recommended for 1st grade and up.
