Well, that was a ride!
Stormdancer is a very complex world and book. It took me a while to come to terms with everything that was going on and fully understand the world, characters, and Yukiko's hidden abilities. But once everything clicked in place (we're talking 150ish pages here!), I honestly couldn't anticipate how much this story would grow on me!
The star of the show has to be Buruu. He's all pent up frustration, anger, and sassiness talking straight into Yukiko's head, and I loved every word he said! He constantly reminded me of Eclipse from Godsgrave, which explains why I loved him so much.
In true Jay Kristoff style, we're going to be brutal with our characters, never let things go smoothly, and leave an ending that sets up the rest of the series nicely but annoys as all until we have finished reading the sequel. Fortunately, I don't have to wait years to dive back into this world (finally a bonus to my procrastinating reading books!).

I was a huge fan of Jay Kristoff's Nevernight Chronicles and was looking forward to this and it hasn't disappointed. Steam punk fantasy with a Fuedal Japanese setting, yes please. (Only realizing now how much of the fantasy I wanna read is inspired by/takes place in Fuedal Japan, hopefully I don't get burned out) Gives you multiple characters who you either love or love to hate, there is no in-between. Sets up many great factions which share an uneasy relationship (The guild and the Shogun and his armies, I'm curious how these 2 coexist and were created, we get some insight into this in the books but I want more.) or a clandestine war fought with espionage. (The Kage, pretty straightforward but I love their beliefs and motivations) A mythological beast and magical powers, demons, and steampunk world run by lotus flowers that power everything and also consume everything. I love the use of Japanese throughout and the way the plot progresses, just when I think I know what's gong to happen the story does the exact opposite. This is adult fantasy but I would say it's much more tame compared to Nevernight. I love the world amd world-building but this is also a world I would not wanna live in, the world is highly polluted with citizens having to wear goggles and masks constantly to escape the smog and fumes, rivers and skies are black and Grey, the guild and Shogun rule with an iron fist with no room for mercy, and drug addicts are commonplace as the lotus can be smoked as a drug. This is a very bleak fantasy though not without its moments of levity and hope. Would recommend to anyone who's a fan of Kristoff and even if they're not, would still recommend.
I originally picked up this book, because I loved Nevernight so much. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed with this book and it didn't live up to my expectations.
I enjoyed the story but for some reason it dragged a bit and I had trouble getting into it. The world and the plot are interesting enough concepts, but the execution for me is a bit lacking and maybe this is because as I'm reading I'm subconsciously comparing it to my read of Nevernight.
Set in a world where progress is destroying the planet and people can no longer safely breath the air without a breather/face mask as the very air is poisonous. Our main character has an ability she has to hide as it could mean she is imprisoned or even killed.
Still enjoyable and rated 3 1/2 stars.
