All I heard about this book was that is Japanese meets steampunk and I picked it up. I enjoyed this book immensely. I loved the characters and I loved the mythology. The story was very engaging and kept me wanting to read more. I am excited to see where this series takes me next.
Wouldn’t it be cool if someone could delve into your mind and sort through all the great reading experiences you’ve had, toss the extraneous matter, pick out the glorious bits and roll them all up into one fantastic literary burrito of epic enjoyment?? Stormdancer is my literary burrito of epic enjoyment.
This book was a unique read that I finished in a weekend- which I almost NEVER am able to do anymore. I came into Stormdancer with some pretty high expectations just based on the front cover quote from one of my favorite nerd crushes which had me positively twitching with excitement:
“What’s that? You say you’ve got a Japanese steampunk novel with mythic creatures, civil unrest, and a strong female protagonist? I’m afraid I missed everything you said after ‘Japanese steampunk.’ That’s all I really needed to hear.” –Patrick Rothfuss
I loved the relationship between Yukiko and Buruu, which was like an R-rated version of Christopher Paolini’s Eragon. And that’s another thing that caught me off guard. For some reason (maybe the cover image?), I had assumed that this book was a YA title. I noted- with glee- that there seemed to be a healthy abundance of violence, nudity and a few characters who ran right past third base for a full-out homerun. My first thought: Awesome! My second thought: heh, guess the YA section is a little more exciting than it used to be. However, this title is in fact shelved in adult fiction which is great news for me as I’m hoping that gore and debauchery will be included in the next title in the series (pretty please?).
If you’ve not done much research on Japanese weaponry or Samurai culture (or haven’t read Clavell’s wondrous book Shogun), I’d recommend getting nice and cozy with the index in the back of the book. I’m a glutton for indexes in fantasy fiction. While a well-detailed map will pique my interest, a complete listing of the characters and terminology makes me straight up salivate. Kristoff’s world and character building were fantastic. Japanese mythology clashing with gritty steampunk and a creepy undercurrent of some serious soylent-greenery.
Totally random, but Kristoff’s website is hilarious. And he’s 6’7”. And not unpleasing to the eyes. That has nothing to do with his literary prowess, which is impressive as well. Oh jeez. I sound like a perv now, which was not my intention at all.
Because the other posted reviews for this book have been so darned entertaining and anything I say is going to pale in comparison, I’ll just summarize with this: there is nothing corny, predictable, trite or sucky about this book. It rocks.

Actual rating 2.7 stars. I didn't like this book very much. Too much description, confusing and a lot of info dumping. The ending was the only interesting part and I did like Buruu a lot. But that was it.
FEATHERS GROW BACK.
SISTERS DO NOT.
Buruu was definitely the highlight of this book, and I absolutely loved how he speaks in caps ALL THE TIME. Also, he is incredibly funny and lovable.

Honestly wasn’t feeling this story in the beginning but during the second part i became really invested in it. it really managed to hook me. I loved Kristoffs writing too and i’ll check out the other parts. all tho it’s not going to be my favourite series from him it is definitely fun.
This was way better than I expected it to be! I love Jay Kristoff but it is always scary to go back and read an author’s first work. I really love the Japanese steampunk world and am excited to see where the series goes!
