My Cat Yugoslavia was such a strange book! I didn't think I would like it as much as I did, but it was quite eye-opening. This is why it's always such a treat to read books from different countries- you manage to learn quite a lot about their culture in a book. I previously had no experience reading books with Yugoslavia/Finland culture, which makes it especially wonderful that I learned so much from it. I especially felt for the mother's story, which was about her arranged marriage and unhappiness in her relationship with her husband. However, the son's story was also compelling: strong feelings of alienation and isolation in the course of immigration to a different country. All in all, a really special and emotional book.
