Tre stelle e mezza
Troppo melodrammatico per i miei gusti.

The story takes place in France, just before the beginning of the World War II, when everything is uncertain. We follow a story of Ravic (that's the name he uses, we find out his real name at the very end of the book), a brilliant doctor, surgeon and a german illegal refugee (with no passport or any other documents). He's working illegally in a clinic, performing surgeries that are often too difficult for other surgeons. He meets Joan, helps her and form with her a complicated relationship, something between love and antipathy. But Ravic can't live normally since at any time he could be expelled from France and get arrested. One day he sees Haake, a man who tortured him back in Berlin, and decides to get revange.

This book disappointed me a little. I heard a lot about how wonderful and unique it is, but I can't quite agree. Well, it is unique. I've never read anything similar to it and that's definitely a pro. But at the same time there were times where not much were happening. This book has about five bigger events but between them we got some dialogues and events (sometimes unnecessary) that aren't really interesting. I know that some of them are important to understand the characters and the plot, but not all of them. This book could easily be 100 pages shorter and I believe it would still make perfect sense. There were some parts, though, that were really moving and made me think about the unfairness of the world (especially in the times of WWII).

Nonetheless, even though this book has almost 500 pages, I read it relatively quickly, mostly because of the huge number of dialogues.
I'm not sure if I recommend it. It was an interesting read anyway and I'll probably grab another Remarque's book in the future.

A book about how love can make you feel alive again, even after you thought you feel nothing and have rotten to your core
