Read in two sittings, one day.

Some details -

Maria sleeps outside, but covers herself in beach towels instead of blankets in order to convince herself that the dark times are only temporary.

“As lessons go, these two seem to hold up, but not to apply.”

Eerie, hollow, dream-like — a fitting read for this weekend.

In the 'blurb' it says, 'She writes with a razor'.  That is so true. It's not a comfortable read, but in a short novel you understand the characters and their stiflingly 60s LA lives.

I didn’t like this book at first because minimalism isn’t my preferred style. However, Joan Didion is just so good at her craft that you can’t help but get wrapped in Maria and the tragic life she’s forced into. This novel really is a wonderfully sad and raw depiction of womanhood that everyone should read.
