Its fascinating how in her head I felt despite it being written in third person, how much I felt I knew in so little words written. I've had imaginary arguments with the blurb on the back of the book and everyone who calls Maria 'aimless', 'erratic', 'apathetic' because I'll always struggle to condense my Maria into something so simplified, palatable, and clinical. To say this disregards her every attempt to play with the cards dealt. To say this denies her complexity.
'I know what 'nothing' means, and keep on playing.
Why, BZ would say.
Why not, I say.'
It's not indifference to life, but the acknowledgement of its absurdity. Maria defies the conflation of nihilism and apathy or pessimism. She continues to play because she feels and wants things in spite of knowing it's nothing. She's not emotionally hollow, she's philosophically positioned.
I suppose Maria represents a nihilist in its truest, least reductive sense.

It's odd to rate this book in terms of stars. It's not a good read. But I couldn't put it down.
I read didion because she doesn't want to be liked. And her characters don't either.
I rated this highly because folks should read it: it's an unapologetic look into the loneliness and depravity of upper class white society, and the ways that depravity is taken out on women's bodies.
