OH MY! I ADORED this book. What an amazing tie in to Anne Frank. Gave me the chills!

This was a short book, with a story that moves along at a brisk pace, and I read it in about a day. This tells the fictitious story of the family that betrayed Anne Frank; the story is presented as one long flashback, as two estranged brothers meet up and the elder shares the family's big secret with the younger. Overall it was pretty good, and I think the author kept it at just the right length -- he told the story, no more, no less.

Although the story is set in modern day Holland, it mostly tells the story of Joop's childhood during WWII. And yes, Anne Frank is involved, though Joop is not a fan. He hates tulips because that's how he and many survived the war rationing, while those in hiding like Anne ate much better. Joop also survived by smuggling supplies, until that didn't work any more. Then he survived by other, even worse, ways. Yet, you somehow can't blame the boy that became the adult man looking back on his life. Although I love historical fiction novels and thought this was a good read, it didn't grab me as anything great or exciting.
