What a fun, exciting, thrilling, read! I love the tie to Mary Shelley and the whole slasher vibe of the story. I bought it on a whim and I'm so glad that I did.

When I saw this book, I knew I wanted to read it. I never read the backs of books, only ever look at the covers. This book was fun, thrilling, suspenseful, and shocking. From the beginning to the end, I never knew what was going to happen next. When I thought I knew was what coming next, I was wrong.

This book is about a girl who when through something traumatic then relocates to a different town and school. She starts out as an outcast, but finds herself in a secret club called The Mary Shelley Club. She finally found people who she can relate to, who she can have fun with. The only problem was, she didn’t actually know anything about the club or its members. What started out as fun games, turned dark.

I absolutely loved this book, and read it in two sittings. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it so much, but I highly recommend it. I’m a little sad that there’s not a sequel, but maybe the author will eventually write one.

"Real monsters aren't the ones created by man. The real monster is man himself."

⌗ wow, this book was really good! going into the mary shelley club, i wasn’t sure how much i would enjoy it, but it surprised me in the best way!

⌗ goldy moldavsky did an excellent job with the pacing of this story. while it did start a bit uninteresting, i was quickly hooked after about 125 pages! as soon as i’d feel bored, chaos would ensue, once again catching my attention. her writing style, while nothing extraordinary, was perfect for this story!

⌗ the plot was very captivating! a group of teenagers causing havoc in the form of “fear tests” was something i’ve never read about before! i did guess most of the plot twists (including the major one towards the end), but i’m so glad the story ended the way it did! i can’t imagine a more compelling and shocking ending to this book.

⌗ in all honesty, i had a hard time connecting to rachel chavez, the main character, in the beginning, but by the end of this book, i was rooting for her so much! she’s such a strong character and deserved so much better. my opinions on the side characters are split: i love half of them and despise the other half. but i don’t want to talk about them for the risk of accidentally spoiling the story!

⌗ as a whole, i really enjoyed this book!! it’s perfect for lovers of horror movies, gothic atmospheres, and mysterious, secret clubs! try not to take it too seriously, and just enjoy yourself while reading this book. <3

ugh I wanted to like this a lot more than I did but the ending and everything leading up to it kinda lost it for me. I also wasn't really able to connect to any of the characters (but maybe that's the point cause they're all terrible rich teens).

There was a lot that I enjoyed about this book, but I also felt like I had to suspend belief more than I would have liked. Some of the Fear Tests (like the clown one) just didn’t have enough fear factor, too many home invasions/accidents/death that police would have been looking into and making connections between.

I did like to see the club dynamics and I understood trying to cope with trauma through horror. I would actually like to read it if there’s a sequel, I just hope that some of it can be a bit more believable, and ever more suspense/horror.

4.5 ⭐️ rounded up! The dialogue was a little cringey at times (think older millennial writing gen z lines). It’s written as a mix of first and third person with the main character’s POV giving us insight to her thoughts, mixed in with 3rd person POVs of other characters in the book. I guessed one of the plot twists by halfway through the book, but certainly didn’t guess the ending. I couldn’t put this down! It’s a longer book but no part of it felt like it drug out for too long - all of the details had purpose.
