I liked the first book in this (loose) series more, but this was still fun. I just got annoyed by the length of the "She deserves better" in this book. But I did enjoy seeing the Talbot sisters from book 1 again!

"You do not let them win. Not ever. There is nothing in the world they like more than tearing a woman down for having too much courage. And there is nothing in the world that makes them angrier than not being able to break her."

Absence makes the Scot grow fonder

Adored this installment! There is something about a big Scot with an even bigger heart. ♥️

🎙️ The audiobook was a pleasant way to escape while doing housework. Justine Eyre always delivers a great performance.

🎧 I highly recommend speeding the reading pace up. I listen at 2x the speed.

I loved many aspects of this one. Likeable characters, lots of humour, and a fairly unique set-up. But my least favourite romance trope is "crux of plot could be solved by an honest conversation between the two leads" and this was definitely an example of that.

MacLean has a special spot in my heart, probably because her [b:Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake|6584134|Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (Love By Numbers, #1)|Sarah MacLean|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1286649993s/6584134.jpg|6777627] was my very first HR read, and I adored it.

That said, while this was fun... the emo angst was a little tedious. I mean, at one point I was like PLEASE STOP WITH THE SELF-FLAGELLATION AND JUST TALK TO HER ALREADY!

But... still fun. I just found that element to be pretty repetitive.

I struggled with the delayed reveal on the MMC's backstory in this installment, primarily because the information we DID have made the conflict feel flimsy (and genuinely annoying) for a lot of the book (Why won't he marry her? Because "she's not for him" ... ?). Ultimately, the reveal does help contextualize a lot of the MMC's self-flagellation, but I almost DNF'd it before then. I know MacLean is on track to be one of my most-read authors this year, so I'm not too worried about this one being a bit of a miss for me - I still enjoyed reading it, just likely won't return for reread. Cannot wait for Day of the Duchess and the angsty mess it promises!
