This graphic novel holds a lot of charm and heart while never steering away from tough subject matter, such as grooming. It is a work that encourages trust and intuition after experiencing heartbreak and pain, and who will stand by your side once you are out of the fire.

I thought it handled the heavy topics well. It just resonated with me as someone who grew up in the same time period and dealt with/friends dealt with the same kind of issues.

While there is one overarching plot that spans the full timeline of the book (a few months) there are also several smaller storylines that are never really resolved. I kept getting invested in one, only to have it dropped with no real ending, just a full page illustration with no text and then it was on to the next mini plot.

Even the main plot ended like this.
Liv told people about her teacher grooming her
and it just kind of ended there. Additionally, as someone who has experienced this personally, the reaction of the people around Liv to this secret was nice, if unrealistic to me. Liv tells people what has happened, and everyone believes her and sides with her immediately. Happy for her, but that's not what happened most of the time in 2002.

This book gave me so many emotions! The pop culture references reminded me so much of my teenage years, and the nostalgia was such a joy. I was also here for the found family, the female friendship groups ousting shitty dudes, male friends of said shitty dude also siding with the women in their life, the queer-affirming mom!!
